The 72nd Venice Film Festival hosts the prémiere of the latest work of artist Antoni Muntadas Dérive Veneziane

· Antoni Muntadas will show his lastest work, Dérive Veneziane, a video projection dedicated to the city of Venice next Wednesday

· From 1st September to 12th September the Dérive Veneziane of Muntadas can be seen in the Movie Village at the Giardino – Lido.

About the project
Dérive Veneziane is about Venice. Cities are sometimes represented by strong stereotypes or clichés. Dérive Veneziane tries to show another side of the city, the hidden, the unknown, the mysterious.
Through a journey based on the Situationists’ dérive, by night and from a boat…
Dérive Veneziane brings notions of darkness, loneliness, discovery, loss, intrigue and phantasmagoria.
Drifting by night through Venice, on water. Encountering the unexpected and the unanticipated.
A series of resulting tableaux precipitate a new awareness of this urban environment as it is transformed by darkness. Removing all predictable daytime paths, this wandering mise-en-scène gives rise to a new awareness. Exploring the psychogeography first defined by Guy Debord, this journey seeks to modulate reality by creating a disorientating undertow and a keen awareness of terroir.
Venice by night is stimulating, along the lines of what Honoré de Balzac described as flânerie or 'the gastronomy of the eye'.

About the artist
Antoni Muntadas, born in Barcelona and living in NY since 1971, was an early pioneer of video and installation in the mid-seventies, and he has continued to work with photography, video, installation, audio recording, and urban intervention.

Muntadas has received numerous honours, including awards from the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, the Rockefeller Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, the New York State Council on the Arts, Arts Electronica in Linz, Laser d’Or in Locarno, and the Premi Nacional d’Arts Plàstiques de la Generalitat de Catalunya. In 2005 the Spanish Ministry of Culture awarded him the Premio Nacional de Artes Plásticas and the Velazquez Prize.

Iterations of his iconic projects—such as Between the Frames: The Forum (1983–93), The Board Room (1985), and the ongoing series On Translation (1995– … ) and The Construction of Fear (2008– … )—have been widely exhibited at institutions and galleries in North and South America, Europe, and the Middle East. Muntadas participated in the 1977 and 1997 editions of Documenta, the 1991 Whitney Biennial, the 1983 São Paulo Biennial, the 2000 Havana Biennial, the 2002 Taipei Biennial, the 2004 Kwangju Biennial, the 2011 Istanbul Biennial, and the 2012 Paris Triennale. In 2005 he represented Spain at the Venice Biennale, where he realized a comprehensive project on the architectural evolution of the Biennale over its history. Recent surveys have included exhibitions at the MACBA, Barcelona; Laboratorio Arte Alameda, Mexico City; Weserburg, Bremen; Espacio Fundación Telefónica, Buenos Aires; Württembergischer Kunstverein, Stuttgart; and the Estaçao Pinacoteca, São Paulo. His most recent exhibition, Muntadas: Entre/Between, took place in the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid, from November 2011 until March 2012. It was exhibited at the Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, Lisboa, Portugal, at the Jeu de Paume in Paris and in the Vancouver Art Gallery, Vancouver, Canada, in 2013.

Recently he has shown in Kent Fine Art, New York, Galleria Michela Rizzo, Venezia, Galeria Joan Prats, Barcelona and Galeria Moisés Pérez de Albéniz y in Madrid as well as the MuCEM- Musée des Civilisations de l’Europe et de la Mediterranée- Marseille in France.

Since 2011 he has been working on the project Asian Protocols, first presented to the public in 2014 at the Total Museum in Seoul (Korea), and in progress in Japan and China.
